A
Local retailer has donated £500 to local charity Birtley Rotary Club, which
will use the funds to purchase dictionaries for every child who is leaving
primary school to move on to secondary school later this year. Each dictionary
holds an inscription page with the child’s name providing a unique gift for
every child.
Harry
Jagpal, store owner, commented, “We decided to donate this significant sum of
money to the Birtley Rotary Club because of the fantastic work it does for the
local community. It helps a wide spectrum of the community ranging from school
children right through to the elderly. The local community offers us great
support throughout the year and the MADL charity allows us to show our
appreciation and give something back. We look forward to making further
donations in the future.
Please note ;- The club will not be convening at the Ravensworth on the 28th of April due to other commitments.
Dear Fellow Rotarians throughout District 1030,In a letter to 1030 Presidents recently I explained that, in response to the goals set by RI President - Literacy, Polio
Eradication and Working with the Community, the Rotary Club of Birtley are hoping that
all of the Clubs in District 1030 can
work together to produce a book of Children’s poems. Proceeds fromthe sale of these
books will go to Polio Eradication. The
author Gervais Phinn has been contacted and has kindly agreed to support
this project and to write a forward to the
poetry book.We would be grateful if each Club in the district
would submit up to three poems written
by children under 16 years of age.Birtley Club are intending to offer a poetry
competition to pupils, under 16 year of
age, to the schools in its area. This is only one way of approaching the
project. It may be that Rotary Club members
would like to engage their families or
friends in writing the poems. In order to give continuity to the format of the
poetry book and at the same time giving
children scope to write about their various interests, we suggest the following themes:Family and
FriendsAnimalsThe Four SeasonsThe

District Conference in Durham in
September 2010.We sincerely hope that you will be able to contribute

raise a considerable amount of money, as we did with the District Recipe
Book. Maureen Maltby is
